The Beauty in Meditation
When we meditate, are we trying to change something?
Wanting to be happy is a worthy goal, but do we know what happiness feels like? Do we know what suffering feels like in our body?
How does that feeling of cold express itself as the judgement ‘I am cold’. When you are suffering, when does the thought ‘I am suffering’ arise?
Suffering becomes a monster when you look away from it. When we push at its imagined force, the force becomes real. You will feel its strength, but what happens when you turn around and look directly, not at the meaning, but at the sensations of suffering? of fear?
Maybe we will see a hint that beyond the sensations, there is nothing there.
When that realisation trickles through, the force dissipates. Only when we can look at suffering, without changing it or resisting it or running away from it, can we begin to see what suffering/fear/happiness/excitement/etc really is.
This kind of open, loving, observation is what slowly starts to detangle our mind from itself. There are years, decades of training that we need to work through so we need to be patient with ourselves.
As we begin to free ourselves, we will begin to take meaningful action.
Next time you are frustrated with something, explore what that frustration feels like in your body. Before we figure it out, lets just experience it.
We don’t need to figure out beauty, it’s just there to be experienced.
